Anthracite aluminium sliding doors: a rear extension opened up to the garden

One of our favourite recent installations: a pair of anthracite grey aluminium sliding doors on a rear extension in North London, replacing a tired set of white uPVC patio doors. The brief was simple. More light, a wider opening to the garden, and a door that suits a modern extension without feeling cold inside.

Why sliding doors rather than bifolds

Bifold doors are brilliant when you want the whole wall to fold away in summer. For most of the year, though, a sliding door gives you more glass and less frame, because there are only two or three panels instead of five or six. That means a clearer view of the garden when the doors are shut, which in Britain is most of the time.

What was fitted

• Two panel aluminium sliding door in anthracite grey (RAL 7016), the colour most of our extension customers ask for.

• Double glazed units with a low emissivity coating, so the room stays warm in winter and does not overheat in summer.

• Multi point locking and a low threshold, so the doors are both secure and easy to step through.

• Matching anthracite handle and a track that sits level with the floor inside.
